Bite Beauty Upswing Full Volume Mascara is made for lashes that are on the sparse side. A few passes of the wand are enough to add fullness, length, lift and definition, and the formula leans on a volumizing tree berry wax paired with jet-black pigment to do it.

What it actually does

• Fills in sparse lashes. Bite's claim is instant fullness from a few swipes — this is written for people who don't have much to work with naturally.
• Four things at once. Volume, length, lift and definition are all part of what the brand says the formula delivers, rather than volume alone.
• Tree berry wax carries the volume. It's the ingredient Bite credits for the thickening effect.
• Jet-black pigment. Iron oxides give the deep black; this isn't a soft brown-black.
• Buildable intensity. The formula is designed to take extra layers, so one coat for daytime and three for a heavier eye is a legitimate way to use it.

Bite doesn't describe it as waterproof, so we won't either. Treat it as a regular wax-and-water mascara and remove it with a cleansing balm or oil-based remover.

Will it hold a curl?

Lift is one of the four effects Bite names for this formula. If your lashes are stubbornly straight, curling them first and then applying from the root up gives the wax the best chance of holding the shape.

How dark is the black?
