Clinique Smart Night™ Clinical MD Multi-Dimensional Repair Treatment Retinol is a night-only retinol treatment at 0.3%, built into a creamy base rather than a thin serum. The idea behind the texture is simple: deliver a real dose of retinol while hydrating enough to offset the dryness retinol often brings.
What it actually does
- Works overnight at 0.3% retinol. Clinique's stated mechanism is accelerated cell turnover, which drives the rest of the results.
- Softens lines and wrinkles. The brand claims a visible reduction in fine lines and wrinkles with continued nightly use.
- Evens tone and adds radiance. Clinique describes skin tone looking more even and more radiant, with pores appearing smaller.
- Hydrates immediately and keeps hydrating. The formula is designed to give both an instant and a lasting moisture payoff, specifically to counter retinol dryness.
- Sinks in rather than sitting on top. Despite being creamy, it is formulated to absorb into the skin.
- A long free-from list. No denatured alcohol, SLS, SLES or sulfates, no synthetic colours — and per Clinique's clean philosophy, no parabens, phthalates or fragrance.
How to use
- Use it at night only. A pea-sized amount — roughly 0.25 g — covers the whole face.
- Keep it off the eye area.
- Ease in. For the first fortnight, apply on alternate nights, then move to every night. Drier or first-time retinol skin can stay on the alternate-night schedule longer.
- If it stings or feels uncomfortable, drop back to every other night until your skin settles — that can take as long as four weeks.
- For comfort, pair it with a mild cleanser and layer a moisturiser over the top.
- Sunscreen is not optional. Use SPF 15 or higher every day while you are using it and for a full week after you stop, and keep sun exposure down generally.
- Do not stack it with another retinol product.
Clinique's regimen suggestion: in the morning, Smart Clinical Repair™ Wrinkle Correcting Serum, Wrinkle Correcting Cream and Eye Cream; at night, this retinol with the Smart Clinical Repair™ Wrinkle Correcting Cream and Eye Cream.
Is it right for you?
Yes, if…
- Fine lines, wrinkles, uneven tone or visible pores are your priority
- You want a meaningful retinol percentage in a cushioned, creamy base
- You will realistically wear SPF every day
- You prefer fragrance-free, alcohol-denat-free formulas
Think twice if…
- You already use another retinol — Clinique says not to combine them
- Your skin is very dry or new to retinoids and you can't commit to a slow build-up
- You are unwilling to limit sun exposure during and after use
- You want a morning product — this one is strictly PM
Questions
Is redness, tingling or flaking a bad sign?
Clinique describes mild redness, warmth, tingling or light flaking as normal and temporary — signs the retinol is active. If it becomes genuinely uncomfortable, go back to alternate nights until your skin adapts, which can take up to four weeks.
How much do I actually need?
A pea — about 0.25 g. More is not better with retinol; it mostly means more irritation.
Does everyone react the same way?
No — Clinique states plainly that retinol tolerance differs from person to person. Your timeline for getting to nightly use is yours alone.
Anything to know about weather?
Clinique notes that severe weather — wind, or cold in particular — can irritate more while you are on retinol, so protect your face accordingly.
How long does delivery take?
Delivery takes 3 to 21 working days, depending on availability. Stock on hand ships faster; sourced-to-order items take the longer end.
How do I pay, and what about returns?
We take credit card, debit card, Instapay and mobile wallets — no cash on delivery. Returns cover defective, damaged or expired items only, reported within 1 day of delivery, with refunds to the original payment method within 15–30 days.
