What it actually does

• Shapes and sculpts the eye. The brand's stated intent is to sculpt, shape and enhance the eyes — the shade ladder is laid out for structure, not for colour play.
• Keeps mess to a minimum. MAKEUP BY MARIO credits the palette with strong grip and very little fallout, which is the practical difference between a matte palette you reach for and one you don't.
• Builds from soft to deep. Each shade is buildable, so one pan can be a whisper of definition or a properly smoked crease.
• Suits a wide range of skin tones. The shades were curated for every skin tone by balancing warm and cool in each one, per the brand.
• Doubles as brow powder. Each shadow also works on the brows to fill them in — the brand suggests their E7 Brush, sold on its own, for that job.

How to use

1. Lighter shades first. Sweep one over the whole lid to open up the eye, and take it onto the browbone as a highlight.
2. Medium shades into the crease. Layer and blend them through the crease and outer corner to sculpt softly.
3. Deepest shades at the lash line. Press them in close to smoke and define.
4. On brows: use the same shadows as brow powder for a naturally filled-in brow.
5. Build as needed. Every shade works alone or layered, so go slowly toward the depth you want.

Should I buy this or the original Master Mattes®?

The Neutrals is the sister palette to the original, and the brand's own pro tip is that it works either paired with the original or worn by itself. If you want purely neutral, wearable mattes, start here.

Are there any shimmers in it?

No. All twelve shades are matte with a featherlight finish — if you want shine, you would add it from a separate topper.

Can I really use these on my brows?

Yes — the brand says the shades work as brow powder for a naturally full, filled-in look, applied with their E7 Brush, which is a separate purchase.

What is the formula free of?

Per MAKEUP BY MARIO, the formula excludes triclosan, triclocarban, SLS and SLES sulfates, hydroquinone, coal tar, oxybenzone, retinyl palmitate, mineral oil, phthalates, parabens, and both formaldehydes and the agents that release them. Synthetic fragrance is present at under one percent. Cruelty-free and gluten-free as well.
