Glow Replenishing Rice Milk

Glow Replenishing Rice Milk is Beauty of Joseon's two-layer rice toner — shake it and you get a moisture layer carrying rice extract plus a separate powder layer aimed at sebum. The reference point is migamsu, the rice bran water Joseon-era Korea used on the skin the way we use toner or essence now.

It is the rare hydrating toner that is also trying to keep you from going shiny by noon, which is why it suits combination and oilier skin as much as dry skin.

What it actually does

• Hydrates past the surface. Rice extract and rice amino acids are the backbone of the formula, and Beauty of Joseon says the pair lifts both antioxidant and moisturising effects so skin does not dry out from within during the day.
• Softens rough, dry patches. According to the brand, those same rice actives penetrate to hydrate and smooth skin that reads as dry or uneven to the touch.
• Mops up oil separately. The powder layer carries a sebum control powder that the brand says absorbs sebum and looks after pores — useful if your skin is reddened or breakout-prone.
• Leaves no slick film. Because the layers do different jobs, the brand describes the result as refreshing rather than tacky.
• Sits between two of the brand's other toners. Beauty of Joseon frames it as the deep moisture of their Ginseng Essence Water crossed with the cool feel of their Green Plum toner.
• Adapts across skin types. The brand's claim is that it moves with your skin's needs as the weather changes.

How to use

1. Cleanse first. Then tip a few drops into your palms.
2. Press, don't rub. Pat your palms over the face so it absorbs.
3. Or use a pad. Soak a cotton pad and wipe outward from the centre of the face.

Three brand tips: layer it several times over when skin is thirsty · wipe with a soaked pad to clear away dead cells and sebum and care for pores · or lay a soaked pad on the skin for 5 to 10 minutes as a calming moisture mask.

Why does it look separated in the bottle?

That's by design. One layer holds the moisture side with rice extract, the other is a powder for sebum. Mix them before you pour.
