The Ordinary Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner is exfoliation for people whose skin can't take acids. Instead of an AHA or BHA, it uses a fermented ingredient to loosen surface build-up while adding hydration — so you get smoother, brighter skin without the usual sting.
| Skin types | Normal · dry · combination · oily, including sensitive |
| Targets | Dark spots · dullness · uneven texture |
| Texture | Milky liquid toner — leave on, no rinsing |
| Key actives | Saccharomyces Ferment 30% (with 3% fermented N-acetylglucosamine) · squalane |
| Formulated without | Parabens · phthalates · mineral oil · SLS & SLES · oxybenzone · hydroquinone. Cruelty-free, and gluten-free too. |
What it actually does
- Exfoliates without acid. The fermented saccharomyces complex encourages surface turnover, which is how it smooths rough, uneven texture — The Ordinary positions it as the gentler route to the benefits of a direct acid.
- Hydrates while it works. Squalane in the formula softens skin and supports the barrier, so the exfoliating step doesn't leave you tight.
- Brightens dullness and dark spots. The brand's clinical work reported brighter, more radiant skin and a reduced look of dark spots.
- Gentle enough for reactive skin. It's specifically presented as suitable for sensitive skin — the whole reason the formula exists.
- Backed by the brand's own barrier testing. In testing on 38 people, a single application left the skin barrier measurably stronger eight hours later.
- An Allure Best of Beauty winner, as listed by the brand.
Results above are from The Ordinary's own clinical testing. Individual results vary.
How to use
- Use it twice daily — morning and evening — after cleansing.
- Sweep over face and neck with a cotton pad, or press it in with your fingers.
- Leave it on. There's no rinsing step.
- Keep it away from the eye contour and out of the eyes.
- Follow with your serum and moisturiser, and SPF in the morning.
Is it right for you?
Yes, if…
- Your skin is normal, dry, combination or oily — all four are covered
- Acid exfoliants have stung, flushed or peeled you
- Rough texture, dullness or dark spots are your concerns
- You want hydration built into the exfoliating step
Think twice if…
- You want a strong, fast resurfacing peel — this is deliberately gentle
- You already use several exfoliants daily; stacking them is where irritation starts
- You prefer a water-light toner texture to a milky one
Questions
Can I use it if acids irritate my skin?
That's the case it's built for. It delivers exfoliation through fermented N-acetylglucosamine instead of a direct acid, and The Ordinary states it's suitable for sensitive skin. Start once a day and build up if your skin is very reactive.
Do I rinse it off?
No — leave it on and carry on with the rest of your routine. It's a leave-on toner, not a wash-off treatment.
Morning, night, or both?
The brand directs twice daily, morning and evening. If you're also using retinoids or acids, space them out and watch how your skin responds.
How long does delivery take?
Delivery takes 3 to 21 working days, depending on availability. In-stock bottles arrive sooner; anything we order in for you takes longer.
What payment methods do you accept?
Credit card, debit card, Instapay and mobile wallets — no cash on delivery.
Can I return it if it doesn't suit me?
Returns cover defective, damaged or expired items only, reported within 1 day of delivery. Approved refunds go to the original payment method within 15–30 days.
