The Slim is YSL's narrow matte lipstick, and the shape is the whole idea: a square bullet instead of a round one, so you can draw a sharp edge with the corner and fill with the flat side. Pigment is dense, the finish is matte, and the formula is free of phthalates.

What it actually does

• Draws its own outline. The square bullet is YSL's answer to needing a lip liner — the high corner gives precise lines, the flat face fills.
• Deep colour in a thin layer. It is heavily pigmented, so one pass puts down full matte colour.
• Matte that doesn't feel like armour. YSL describes the finish as lightweight and comfortable to wear despite the opacity.
• Built to stay neat. The brand says the non-drying formula is designed to resist bleeding and cracking, and to save you from constant touch-ups.
• Long-lasting wear. YSL positions it as a long-wear lipstick.

How to use

1. Wind the bullet up around half an inch — enough to use the corner.
2. Use the high point to trace the Cupid's bow, starting at the centre and moving outward to each corner.
3. Turn the bullet onto one of its flat sides to fill in the lower lip.
4. Want even more precision? A lip liner still works underneath, though the shape is meant to make it optional.
5. For a polished finish, YSL suggests defining the lip contour with Touche Éclat Brightening Pen (sold separately) before the colour goes on.

What's the point of a square bullet?

Edges. A round bullet can only give you a soft line; the square one has a sharp corner for outlining and flat planes for filling, which is why YSL says you can apply it with precision and control straight from the tube.

Will it dry my lips out?

YSL formulates it as non-drying and describes the wear as comfortable. That said, matte textures always sit better on lips that have been exfoliated and prepped.

Do I still need a lip liner?

Not for most looks — the bullet shape is designed to do that job. If you want extremely sharp edges, you can still use one.
