Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is the product the brand built its reputation on. It is a watery leave-on exfoliant carrying salicylic acid at two percent, formulated in the pH band of 3.2 to 3.8 so the acid can actually do its job inside the pore.

What it actually does

• Gets inside the pore. Salicylic acid at two percent penetrates to clear the build-up that causes blemishes, and sheds dead cells off the surface at the same time.
• Breaks down what dulls the skin. Paula's Choice describes it working on complexion-dulling residue both on top of the skin and within the pores themselves.
• Green tea as the calming antioxidant. Included to soothe irritated skin while working on the visible signs of ageing.
• Methylpropanediol does two things. It hydrates, and it helps the formula reach where it needs to while adding visible glow.
• Noticeable after one use. The brand's claim is a natural, visible glow from the first application, with skin feeling markedly smoother.
• What the consumer panel reported. On an independent panel: visibly healthier skin for 91% of users, improved texture for 90%, and pores that looked smaller for 82%. Brand-cited figures — individual results vary.

How to use

1. Once or twice a day, after you have cleansed and toned.
2. Soak a cotton pad lightly — disposable or reusable — or just use your fingertips, then sweep it over the face and neck, including the area around the eyes.
3. Keep off the lash line and the eyelids themselves.
4. Leave it on. There is no rinsing step; follow with a serum, a moisturiser, or both.
5. Daytime means SPF 30 or higher, every time. At night, continue with whatever else you use.
6. Ease into it. Every other day at first, watching how your skin responds, and work up to twice daily only if it stays comfortable.

Can I use it around my eyes?

The instructions do include the area around the eyes, but draw a firm line at the lash line and the eyelids themselves — keep it off both.

Do I rinse it off?

No. It is a leave-on exfoliant. Apply it, let it absorb, and carry on with serum and moisturiser over the top.

How fast does it work?

Paula's Choice claims a visible glow after a single use and describes the smoothing effect as happening practically overnight. Pore and texture changes build with consistent use.

Why does the pH matter?

Salicylic acid only works properly in an acidic range. This one is formulated between 3.2 and 3.8, which is why the two percent concentration behaves the way it does on skin.
