The POREfessional Deep Retreat Pore-Clearing Kaolin Clay Mask

Deep Retreat is the clay mask in Benefit's POREfessional range, and it is a gentler one than the category usually allows. The texture is creamy rather than gritty, and because oils are blended in alongside the clay, it draws oil out of pores without leaving the face stripped and tight afterwards. You can literally watch it work: dots appear on the surface as oil is pulled up.

What it actually does

• Clears congested pores. Mineral-rich kaolin clay is the active Benefit credits with visibly clarifying pores.
• Mops up surface oil. Sea fennel extract handles excess oil sitting on the skin, which is why the finish is mattified rather than shiny.
• Softens instead of stripping. Jojoba seed and plum kernel oils bring essential fatty acids including omega-9, so the skin barrier isn't left stressed.
• Shows you the oil coming out. Spots appear across the mask as it dries down — a visible cue that the clay is drawing from the pores.
• Dermatologist tested. Benefit states it is dermatologist tested and suitable for all skin types.
• Clean-formula callouts. Free of parabens, phthalates, retinyl palmitate, sulfates SLS and SLES, oxybenzone, hydroquinone, coal tar and formaldehyde-releasing agents, with under one percent synthetic fragrance. The packaging is recyclable.
• Brand study. In a 112-participant self-evaluation, 96% said skin did not look oily after a single use, and after a month 96% said skin looked clearer and 99% said it felt smoother. Self-reported.

How to use

1. Start clean and dry. Cleanse, dry the skin, then spread an even layer over the face and neck. Once a week is the frequency Benefit recommends.
2. Avoid the eye and mouth areas. If any gets in your eyes, rinse immediately with water.
3. Leave it 30 minutes, or until dry. The dots forming on the surface are oil being pulled up out of the pores.
4. Rinse off. Warm water and your hands are enough.
5. Follow up. Benefit suggests The POREfessional pore minimising primer (sold separately) before makeup to carry the smooth finish through.

What are the dots that appear on the mask?

That is the oil being drawn up out of your pores as the mask dries down. Benefit calls them out specifically as the sign the mask is doing its job, so don't rinse before they show up.

How often should I use it?

Weekly, per Benefit's own usage guidance. Clay masks used more often than that tend to tip skin into dryness, which rebounds as more oil.

Will it dry my skin out?

It is formulated against that — the jojoba seed and plum kernel oils supply fatty acids while the clay absorbs. Benefit describes the experience as gentle and comfortable rather than tightening.

Is the packaging recyclable?

Benefit states the outer packaging is FSC-certified and the aluminium jar and lid are recyclable in many areas. Check your local recycling rules before putting them out.
