Tatcha The Silk Canvas is a velvety balm of pressed silk that you melt into skin before makeup. It smooths the surface, holds your base in place for longer, and keeps pigment sitting on top of a protective layer instead of settling into pores.
What it actually does
- Creates a smooth base. Silk extracts feel nourishing and, per Tatcha, play down the look of pores, fine lines and imperfections before any makeup goes on.
- Makes makeup glide and last. Silk powder is what the brand credits with more even application, longer wear and less excess shine, for a soft-focus finish.
- Keeps makeup out of skin. A botanically derived protective layer sits between the two, which the brand links to fewer clogged pores and breakouts.
- Defends against environmental stress. Anti-pollution actives tackle immediate exposure and support barrier function against future exposure, with Tatcha citing a visible reduction in wrinkles and dullness.
- Evens tone. Pink and gold pearl help skin look healthier, while hadasei-3 — the brand's trinity of green tea, rice and algae — is credited with visibly restoring youthful radiance.
- Multitasks across face, eyes and lips, alone or under makeup, and works with cream, liquid and powder formulas.
- Formula notes: cruelty-free, dermatologist tested, non-sensitising, non-irritating, noncomedogenic, and formulated with no mineral oil, sulfate detergents, synthetic fragrance, urea, TEA or DEA.
The origin story, as Tatcha tells it: a geisha's ritual closes with a wafer-thin film of warmed Japanese wax — Bintsuke — pressed into the skin, which creates a smooth, poreless surface that holds makeup all day and shields what's underneath. The Silk Canvas is the brand's modern reading of that step. Founder Victoria Tsai also notes that every Tatcha purchase supports girls' education through the brand's partnership with Room to Read.
Brand-reported results
Tatcha's published research. Immediately after application, every subject agreed their skin felt smoother. At the two-week mark, all subjects agreed their makeup went on more smoothly and that their skin felt natural, fresh and soft while looking healthier, younger and more even in tone. Of the same group, 95% agreed their complexion had a satin finish, a glow that read as healthy, better foundation coverage, and a soft filter-like look even bare-faced; 90% agreed their makeup stayed crease-free and that they would happily wear the primer on its own. Self-reported brand study data — individual results vary.
How to use
- Skim the spatula gently over the top of the balm. A rice-sized amount covers the whole face — it goes a long way.
- Dot it on with fingertips: forehead, nose, chin, eyelids, cheeks.
- Massage it in and let the silk melt into a second-skin layer before foundation.
- Apply it last in your skincare routine, after everything else.
- Close the lid firmly after each use.
Good to know: it's safe on face, eyes and lips, wears with makeup or on its own, and plays nicely with cream, liquid or powder products.
Is it right for you?
Yes, if your skin is…
- Normal, oily, combination, dry or sensitive — Tatcha ticks all five
- Visibly porous
- Shiny through the day
- Dull or uneven in texture
- Breakout-prone and sensitive to what your base does to it
Think twice if you…
- Dislike balm textures or scooping from a pot — the liquid version exists for that
- Want a treatment product; this is prep and protection, not a serum
- Need hydration — a moisturiser still goes underneath
Questions
How much do I actually need?
One rice-sized scoop does your whole face. Scrape it off with the spatula rather than digging in — using too much is the most common reason a balm primer feels greasy under foundation.
Can I use it on my eyelids and lips?
Yes — Tatcha lists face, eyes and lips as suitable areas, and the application instructions include dotting it onto the eyelids.
Will it clog my pores?
The brand lists it as noncomedogenic, non-irritating, non-sensitising and dermatologist tested, and the protective layer is specifically there to keep makeup from settling into pores. As with anything new, patch test if your skin is reactive.
How long does delivery take?
Delivery takes 3 to 21 working days, depending on availability.
Payment and returns?
Credit card, debit card, Instapay and mobile wallets are accepted; cash on delivery isn't. Returns apply to defective, damaged or expired items only, reported within 1 day of delivery, and approved refunds go to the original payment method within 15–30 days.
